It’s mid September already – and for most parts of the US, autumn approaches. For us in the Southwest, summer is still very much present. And still, we are one week away from the official autumn equinox – the first day of fall. I ask myself, where did the summer months go? Or better still, where did the first 8 1/2 months of 2009 go? It seems to move very quickly these days, and before you know it, the holidays will be here.

Do you find that happening in your business? You get up in the morning and before you know it, the day is over and you wonder, “where did the day go and what did I get done?” You know you worked hard – you were busy all day – you’re tired – you’re ready for the evening, and still you have the lingering feeling that you didn’t get anything done today.

To keep yourself on track, do these 5 simple things.
1. First thing in the morning, ask yourself, “What is the single most important thing I need to do today to further my business?”
2. Do your most important task first. Get the hardest thing done first so you can feel a sense of accomplishment.
3. Prioritize your tasks. After the single most important task is done, prioritize the remaining tasks.
4. Schedule time for tasks such as reading emails, returning phone calls, organizing – all the many things we do instead of the important things that create income or nurture our business.
5. At the end of the day take time to review what you accomplished and make the list of tasks for the next day. You’ll sleep better that night, know you worked hard, and you have a clear sense of what to do in the morning.
